Acknowledge and
repair racial harm
Reckon With supports “white” people to acknowledge and repair racial injustice in themselves, their families, and institutions they’re part of — every day.
Many “white” people are motivated, but stuck.
More of us are learning, protesting, donating, and organizing politically.
But when we finish the book or workshop, we’re overwhelmed. What do we do?
In his autobiography, Malcolm X reflected on the role of “white” people in the movement for racial justice:
“By visibly hovering near us, they are ‘proving’ that they are ‘with us.’ But the hard truth is this isn’t helping to solve America’s racist problem. The Negroes aren’t the racists. Where the really sincere white people have got to do their ‘proving’ of themselves is not among the black victims, but out on the battle lines of where America’s racism really is — and that’s in their home communities; America’s racism is among their own fellow whites. That’s where sincere whites who really mean to accomplish something have got to work.”
Reckon With’s Invitation:
Reckon With invites “white” people to uncover and take action every day where we have the most influence: with our relatives, neighbors, and colleagues.
Engaging the “white” people and institutions in our lives is intimidating.
That’s why Reckon With provides…
-
Reckon With is about applying what we’ve learned in the abstract to our own lives as they unfold every day. Where are we needed most? How do we do respond to injustice effectively and sustainably? Reckon With provides the unique support and resources that each participant requires.
-
Reckon With’s secure tech platform lays out a plan for each meeting, providing bite-sized steps that your group works through at your own pace
-
Each participant is part of a group of 3 “white” people that meets weekly or bi-weekly. Twice a year, all groups gather to reflect, learn and celebrate together
-
Participants learn 4 Core Competencies that are needed to effectively respond to racial harm in real time: history, embodiment, calling in, and root culture. Like artists and athletes, we get stronger over time through consistent practice
-
Every quarter, an expert coach joins groups’ meetings so participants can ask questions, get personalized feedback, and improve. You’ll also have access to hyper-relevant and well-researched learning resources throughout the program
Reckon With takes the fight against racial injustice from…
abstract to actionable
•
daunting to doable
•
solo to supported
What we’re not:
A facilitated workshop
A place to regurgitate what we think we are supposed to say
A book club
Focused on action outside of our personal control
A “woke Olympics” where we perform or tear each other down
Navel-gazing
Who is Reckon With for?
Participants share 3 things:
We’re racialized as “white”
We’re motivated to do something about racial injustice
We’re ready to look honestly at ourselves, and support our group members as they do the same
And vary in many ways:
We live all over the country
We work in many different industries
Some us have been learning for a long time, and others are just beginning
Reckon With is free for all participants. (You’ll get the chance to contribute periodically if you’re able and want to.)
